Planning and development are now underway to upgrade US 70 to interstate standards from Havelock Bypass to East of Thurman Road in Craven County. This project is part of a massive statewide initiative to upgrade US 70 from Raleigh to Morehead City, NC.
This project is intended to help improve regional mobility and military interconnectivity specifically between the port at Morehead City, military bases in Goldsboro and Havelock, and the Global TransPark in Kinston.
Construction for this project, STIP Number R-5777C, is planned to begin in 2022 and is funded for $153.1 million. NCDOT is considering two design alternatives. The cost estimate for Alternative A is $180,512,225 and $207,168,032 for Alternative B.
Nearly all driveways, intersecting streets, and median crossovers will be eliminated, and three new interchanges will be added. There will be parallel service roads for all local traffic.
