New NCDOT Secretary Named by Governor Cooper

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper has appointed a new Secretary of Transportation. Starting October 1st, Joseph “Joey” R. Hopkins will assume the role of leader of the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT). He will take over for Eric Boyette, who is retiring after working for the state for 27 years.

About Joseph “Joey” R. Hopkins

Joey Hopkins has worked for NCDOT for over three decades, all in the Triangle. Starting at the office covering Wake and Durham counties, Hopkins worked his way up to becoming the top engineer. Subsequently, he moved to NCDOT headquarters in Raleigh and was named its Chief Operating Officer.

While NCDOT has faced significant financial hardship due to two major hurricanes and the COVID pandemic in the years preceding, delaying numerous projects, Hopkins is entering the role of Secretary while the department has effectively begun to rebuild its cash reserves.
